    Thanks, Dr. Schwartz

    ByAnanya November 21, 2025November 21, 2025

After three years with the lab, Dr. Sarah Schwartz has wrapped up her post-doc with us! In addition to her work as a microbiologist in the lab, Sarah has been a wonderful mentor, collaborator, and initiator of the Boba Brigade (as seen below). She’s now moving to northern England to work with the Lancaster Environment […]

    Thanks, Dr. White

    BySarah Schwartz August 30, 2024August 30, 2024

We’re sending our very best wishes to Dr. Christian White as he leaves the lab for his new postdoctoral role at Argonne National Lab. Christian’s PhD research explored the genomics and community roles underlying anaerobic ammonium oxidation and associated nitrogen cycle pathways; the results offer significant contributions to both fundamental microbial ecology and applied water […]

    Thanks, Dr. Antell

    BySarah Schwartz July 11, 2024July 11, 2024

This summer, we wished Ned Antell a bittersweet “bon voyage” as he completed his PhD and began his new position as a staff scientist with Remedy Scientific. His massive impact on the lab will be reflected in our research for years to come–and is already evident in a variety of publications, including his recent paper […]

PFAS Regulations Announced by the EPA

    BySarah Schwartz April 10, 2024April 10, 2024

Today, the EPA has announced final regulations on six different PFAS species (PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA/GenX, and PFBS) in drinking water. The rule sets enforceable levels for these PFAS in drinking water. Water systems will now be required to begin monitoring PFAS, and must publicly disclose PFAS levels beginning in 2027. For more information, […]

    Thanks, Dr. Tsou

    BySarah Schwartz February 5, 2024February 5, 2024

Our own Katerina Tsou has completed her PhD and is off to her new position with AECOM. (We are cheering ourselves up by re-reading her newest publication, about PFAS release in stormwater and saltwater, here.) Congratulations, Katerina!

New publication: Interactions between anammox and DNRA bacteria across varying bioreactor nitrogen loading ratios

    BySarah Schwartz August 15, 2023August 15, 2023

Anaerobic ammonium oxidizing (anammox) bacteria are key players in wastewater treatment and environmental nitrogen cycling. These microbes have complex interactions with other groups of bacteria, which affect overall nitrogen metabolism, especially when nitrogen sources vary. This study, led by graduate student Christian White, finds that bacteria performing anammox have a mutualistic relationship with bacteria performing […]
